The need to create extra space was driven by an increasingly common situation whereby a family member looking to down size was moving in to form a joint household. Although sharing a home has its advantages having sufficient space to allow distance and some independence is essential. The extension fulfilled this need by creating a second lounge area together with a dedicated dining area whilst providing the facility to expand the restricted galley kitchen into the new space involving structural alterations to the rear wall of the property, and making it open plan. To complete the project the rear garden was fully landscaped to accommodate the repositioned hot tub, and a new home office.
When extending a property there is a worry that the light will be reduced significantly to the rooms behind. A simple solution to provide reassurance and maximise the borrowed light is to introduce an eye level window as was done with this project as an additional feature. The Orangery also benefited from integral blinds within the sealed units to help regulate sun and offer privacy when required.
