At Essex Conservatories, we are building more and more single storey extensions traditionally styled with tiled roofs to match much closer the property with a specific use in mind such as a self-contained annexe for a family member, a home office offering a dedicated space to run a business, extending a Kitchen to become a modern family room and a growing list of requests to provide custom solutions for additional living space reflecting the many ways people want to live today.
Although these projects are extensions they share many elements we associate with conservatories and orangery styling such as vaulted roofs incorporating various forms of glazing with a higher percentage of glass forming the walls using bi-fold doors, sliding doors, french doors & windows creating more contemporary open plan spaces, which flow & connect more naturally with the outdoors.
So, the standard box extension that simply adds extra floor area is transformed into a diverse range of premium extensions, which we describe as Garden Rooms setting them apart from standard fare. By their nature the construction methods employed are technically a lot more challenging to achieve the desired solution making us expand our horizons and expertise as a company. An example is our work in developing structural steel portal frame solutions working with structural engineers and fabrication companies to create wider glazing spans whilst supporting the roof structure.
The Garden Room appeals to those that prefer a tiled roof to mirror the existing architecture of their property so it blends, whilst at the same time visually delivers the WOW factor both inside and out making it feel special.
This property had a layout that many would recognise with the staircase located off the lounge, which also had to double up as a dining area creating quite a cramped environment not easily lending itself to family gatherings.
The need to increase the ground floor living space was self-evident and the priority was to have a dedicated dining room with some seating to provide a generous space to socialise and entertain. It was clear that the client wanted a room that felt like a ‘proper’ extension to the property not a conservatory whilst at the same time having open views and easy access to the the garden. Soon after completion we understand their home is now designated as the venue for the Christmas festivities by the extended family as they can all be accommodated.
To achieve this combination is about supporting a traditional tiled roof over glazing. The solution was to engineer structural steel columns hidden within the wall cavities and between the frames fixed directly to the underlying foundations.
To enhance the sense of space the roof is vaulted internally incorporating two small VELUX windows to bring additional light into the space. To complete the project the area around the new addition was paved and a dwarf retaining wall constructed in the form of steps up to the lawn level.
