Case Study

The Brief

The existing conservatory built with the property was not designed to take advantage of the views of the surrounding countryside and offer the unrestricted access to the very generous garden. The client was keen to create a contemporary styling to make a statement, contrasting with the property.

As this space was an integral part of the Kitchen come Family Room it was equally important to deal with the issues of the old conservatory, being difficult to retain heat during the winter and the unbearable summer heat by upgrading to the systems we offer that are specifically designed to deal with these shortcoming in performance.

An example being the use of full climate control glass (Planitherm 4S) and sophisticated integral blinds within the sealed units. The customer is delighted with the transformation having successfully achieved all the goals set by them both aesthetically and technically. They particularly have enjoyed socialising around the patio area due to the way it seamlessly flows into the Kitchen/Family Room when the bi-fold doors are fully open. It was noted how great it was relaxing on the lounger watching Wimbledon this year on the flat screen TV on the conservatory wall, drink in hand!

Design Notes

To give this building its contemporary edge and a distinct styling it was proposed that the roof only be dark grey in colour externally picking up the steel structures of the veranda & juliet balcony that are a feature of the property. The client went with the concept and agrees it was successful in that it now blends in a way that the old building did not due to its dominance of rear elevation.

There were a few challenges to the project, the first being to ensure structural integrity with two sets of bi-fold doors leaving the building supported on one corner which was resolved with a concealed steel frame anchored to the underlying foundations signed off by our structural engineer. Secondly although less of a technical challenge but more credit to our team working on site was the customers concern about the appearance of the brickwork after removing the plaster and brick repointing required due to the very high roof of the old conservatory. We employed specialist sand blasting and the skill of our team to resolve this problem to a high standard and satisfaction of the client.
