Case Study

The Brief

Initially our client was only considering a modest conservatory off the formal Dining Room which was rarely used and would have effectively isolated the proposed conservatory from daily life. During the discussions at the first design meeting it became apparent that as just a couple living in a detached property it was not so much lack of space but living space not where it was needed.

It was also clear to an outsider that the garden was under utilised due to the sloping nature of the site, small proportions, and its lack of direct access to the main reception room and kitchen which was a little claustrophobic even though a partition wall had previously been removed separating the Utility Room & Kitchen to try and address the problem.

Our proposal was not just to build a contemporary Orangery extension, removing the rear wall to the existing Kitchen, taking care not to damage the units whilst doing so but also to design a decking that seamlessly extended the living space into the garden taking advantage of the elevated garden boundary retaining walls. This space now forms a private area in the style of an enclosed courtyard.

The garden is now inviting and a hub for relaxation and socialising with friends & family. Our clients faith in the design concept in what became an ambitious and significant spend compared to the original thinking has been rewarded – as they say seeing is often believing.

Design Notes

Additional construction work was required due the local ground conditions, employing piled foundations with concrete ring beam incorporating a block & beam floor compliant with Building Control. Having created a new dining space the opportunity was taken to convert the formal dining room into a much needed home office/study and screening it off from the Orangery area by installing a bespoke pair of internal Oak doors with etched glass for privacy but still maximising light.

Although large expanses of glass are a desirable feature today having control to adapt the environment on any given day is important. The installation of integral blinds sealed inside the double glazed units achieved this, requiring no cleaning, no maintenance, deflecting the sun when needed, and offering privacy & a cosy atmosphere at night.
